KKDIK REGISTRATION OBLIGATION FOR POLYMERS AND THE STATUS OF MONOMERS

Content addition date : 13-06-2025

The KKDİK (Registration, Evaluation, Authorization, and Restriction of Chemicals) Regulation has introduced comprehensive regulations to ensure the safe use of chemicals. However, there is a special case for polymers: Polymers are exempt from KKDİK registration. Nevertheless, monomers and other substances contained within polymers may be subject to registration under certain conditions.

A polymer manufacturer or importer is required to register the monomers or other substances within the polymer under KKDİK if both of the following conditions are met:

► The polymer consists of 2 % weight by weight (w/w) or more of such monomer substance(s) or other substance(s) in the form of monomeric units and chemically bound substance(s);
► The total quantity of such monomer substance(s) or other substance(s) makes up one ton or more per year.

In this case, the monomers or other substances within the polymer become subject to KKDİK registration, and the relevant registration application must be submitted.

This regulation is crucial for managing the potential risks of chemical substances contained within polymers, even though polymers themselves are not directly subject to registration. Since monomers, in particular, may pose chemical risks, their registration is essential for implementing necessary safety measures.

In conclusion, while polymers are not directly subject to KKDİK registration, the monomers they contain may require registration if they meet specific conditions. Therefore, polymer manufacturers and importers should carefully evaluate the quantity and properties of the monomers and other substances in their products and complete the necessary registration procedures to ensure compliance with the KKDİK Regulation.
