SAFETY DATA SHEET - WHY IS SDS IMPORTANT?
Content addition date : 21-07-2025
Safety in workplaces where chemicals are used, stored or transported is very important for both employees and the workplace environment and is a legal obligation. One of the most effective ways to ensure this safety is the Safety Data Sheet (SDS). SDS is a detailed document containing the necessary Hazard and precautionary information about a chemical or a product containing a chemical. This document helps employees and downstream users (customers) to use chemicals safely and to take their own precautions against potential hazards.
The SDS consists of 16 main headings and 49 sub-headings as determined by legal regulations. Turkey follows the legal regulations of the European Union on SDS. Today, there are 16 main headings and 51 sub-headings for EU-compliant safety data sheets. Until the updates in the EU are published in the official gazette in Turkey, there may be slight differences.
The Safety Data Sheet (SDS) for chemical substances, mixtures or articles with an engineered release of chemicals placed on the Turkish market must be prepared by a Chemical Assessment Specialist (CAE) and must be in Turkish. Safety data sheets prepared without meeting these conditions will be inaccurate, incomplete, misleading and, of course, will not comply with legal regulations.
Conclusion;
SDS is not just a document, it is the cornerstone of chemical safety. It helps to prevent accidents, protect human health and create a safe working environment by providing accurate and understandable information.
