BIOCIDAL PRODUCTS IN OUR LIVES

A biocidal product is any chemical or biological substance containing active ingredients designed to destroy, repel, render harmless, or control harmful organisms such as bacteria, viruses, fungi, or pests. These products are regulated to ensure they are safe for human health and the environment.
In Turkey, biocidal products are governed by the Biocidal Products Regulation issued by the Ministry of Health.
Product Types Defined in the Regulation
The regulation classifies biocidal products into 4 main groups and a total of 22 product types:
Group 1: Disinfectants
- Type 1: Human hygiene products (e.g., hand sanitizers)
- Type 2: Surface disinfectants (used in homes, hospitals, schools)
- Type 3: Veterinary hygiene products
- Type 4: Disinfectants for food and feed areas
- Type 5: Drinking water disinfectants
Group 2: Preservatives
- Types 6–16: Includes wood preservatives, paint preservatives, and water system protectants
Group 3: Pest Control Products
- Type 18: Insecticides (e.g., mosquito or cockroach killers)
- Type 19: Repellents and attractants (e.g., insect repellents, rodent lures)
Group 4: Other Biocidal Products
- Types 20–22: Includes embalming fluids, laboratory disinfectants, and specialty products
