What Is a Biocidal Product License?
A biocidal product license is an official authorization that certifies a product’s effectiveness and safety in controlling harmful organisms. In Türkiye, this license is granted according to procedures set by the Ministry of Health, and products must be licensed or registered before being placed on the market.
Purpose of the License:
► Protect public health: Ensures products are manufactured in a way that does not harm human or environmental health.
► Ensure reliability: Confirms that products have passed efficacy and safety tests.
► Market control: Keeps track of which products are legally available for sale.
Types of Licenses:
► License Certificate: Required for domestically produced products or imported goods.
► Registration Certificate: Issued for low-risk biocidal products that are allowed on the market.
Product Categories:
Biocidal products are grouped into four main categories:
- Disinfectants (e.g., hand sanitizers)
- Preservatives (e.g., antibacterial paints)
- Pest control products (e.g., insect repellents)
- Other biocidal products (Paints that protect the exterior of ships, yachts and boats from aquatic organisms; antifouling paints)
If a product is intended for direct contact with the human body (like hand disinfectants), the application must be submitted to the Turkish Medicines and Medical Devices Agency. For other types of products, applications go to the General Directorate of Public Health.
