EXTENDED SDS (eSDS) AND EXPOSURE SCENARIOS

Content addition date : 18-09-2025

Working safely with chemical substances involves more than just knowing their hazard classification. Especially under the REACH Regulation (known as KKDİK Regulation in Türkiye), the Extended Safety Data Sheet (eSDS) offers a more comprehensive approach to chemical safety. In addition to the classic Safety Data Sheet (SDS), the eSDS includes exposure scenarios.

Exposure scenarios detail how a chemical can be used under specific conditions without posing risks to human health or the environment. These scenarios specify parameters such as usage amount, duration, application method, ventilation level, and personal protective equipment. The goal in each scenario is to ensure that exposure remains below acceptable limits.

An eSDS is mandatory for substances classified as hazardous and placed on the market in quantities of 10 tonnes or more per year. The manufacturer or importer prepares the eSDS based on the Chemical Safety Report (CSR) and shares it throughout the supply chain. Downstream users must comply with these scenarios or conduct their own exposure assessments if needed.

In conclusion, the eSDS is not just about identifying hazards—it’s about controlling them. Exposure scenarios make chemical safety practical, not just theoretical. This system provides a robust framework for both worker health and environmental sustainability.
